My problem isn’t with Smiths current play, he was bound to have another stick handling gaffe, but he’s played well overall for a solid chunk of the season. My problem is with the coaching staff giving him 7 of 9 starts. That intimates that they view him as the true no 1, and that I have a major problem. I’d be completely fine with a split in starts down the middle with the way he’s played but 7 of 9? Jesus. And to anyone saying we can’t criticize the coaching staff because we’ve had a good season, give me a damn break. We sure have had a good season, and Mike Smith has almost nothing to do with it while David Rittich has a ton to do with it. Seeing smith get 7 out 9 starts over Rittich, after Smith single handedly almost nose dived our season just as it began, reeks of disrespect. Rittich is and should be our no 1 no matter what loyalty the coaching/management staff seems to have to Smith, and I think it is perfectly reasonable to point that out.
