Here's the thing with Iginla. If you don't follow hockey you know who he is.
My mother can name probably 2 people who ever played for the Flames despite my die hard allegiance for 30 years.
She doesn't pronounce his name remotely correctly, but she knows Iginla.
This morning I said to my wife, "You know tonight's a special night."
She responded, "I know, the Flames are retiring Iginla's jersey.... what? Why are you looking so surprised?"
1. I didn't know she knew retiring jerseys was a thing.
2. I didn't know she knew who Iginla was.
3. I have no idea HOW she'd know that, as I didn't bore her with the details. (Apparently I have sports on TV *alot* or so was her explanation).
That said. Obviously, the guy transcended the average hockey fan.
If non sports fans living in the frozen north Atlantic with nothing but Leafs and Habs fans (the occasional Bruins and Oilers fan mixed in... and me the lone Flames fan) know who Jarome Iginla is and that his jersey is being retired this evening, that demonstrates he truly is something special.
