As ugly as it would have appeared at the time, today on a different team he would be happy and nobody outside of Edmonton would care about the past events. Now he has to face the drawn out ordeal of asking to be traded so in delaying the inevitable he has simply made things more difficult on himself and his camp. However if he indeed asks for a trade this will be one of the few times that everyone (outside of Edmonton) will universally side with the player in a situation like this. Maybe future top prospects will be more proactive the next time the Oilers win a draft lottery and refuse to report.
You have Draisatl who may likely become a 50 goal scorer and McDavid who is a multi Art Ross winner, and you have made the only playoffs 1 out of 4 times with them on a fluke of a season.

The Penguins equivalent have made the playoffs 12 straight years starting with year one that Malkin and Crosby were both on the Penguins and have won 3 Stanley Cups.

Blackhawks equivalent missed the playoffs the first year Kane and Toews were together, and made the playoffs 9 straight years with 3 Stanley Cups before missing again.

One is not like the other, and that is because one is no good.
