The moment the Oilers won the draft lottery and a miserable looking McDavid walked down that hall to face the music it was always destined to fail for both parties. The fact that things have played out even worse than anyone could imagine only reaffirms that McDavid should have pulled a Lindros and informed the Oilers he would not report to them if drafted. As ugly as it would have appeared at the time, today on a different team he would be happy and nobody outside of Edmonton would care about the past events. Now he has to face the drawn out ordeal of asking to be traded so in delaying the inevitable he has simply made things more difficult on himself and his camp. However if he indeed asks for a trade this will be one of the few times that everyone (outside of Edmonton) will universally side with the player in a situation like this. Maybe future top prospects will be more proactive the next time the Oilers win a draft lottery and refuse to report.
