Sure, but when the Flames were good, other teams were strong too. The Flames have surely not been the best team in the league over NJ’s tenure.
If you look at the standings and count the Cups, you may find that NJ was strong for a not insignificant period of time.

Not for the amount of time Calgary was, and the differences weren't as great. NJ was an expansion team with a really low winning percentage when Calgary was dominating them so badly. When NJ was good and winning Calgary wasn't so bad they were an auto-win.
