Overlap is fine and encouraged, the same way the Art Ross is often the Hart.

As far as I know there are only four awards that the NHL bestows that are position-specific, and two of them are for goalies: The Selke, the Norris, the Vezina and the William Jennings. Three awards are determined entirely by year-end statistics: The Art Ross, the Rocket Richard, and the William Jennings.
Forwards are eligible to win six awards. Defensemen are eligible to win six. A defenseman is not precluded from winning the Hart Trophy, nor the Art Ross, nor even the Rocket Richard. I could see the addition of an arbitrary award for points by a defenseman, but if anything, that should be it.
