The miles Neal has put on in these many long playoff runs certainly has taken a toll. Combine that with a player that already isn't fast, in a league that is playing much faster and that has caused him trouble. Combine that further with not terribly good chemistry with different linemates, a super low shooting percentage, some bad luck here and there, diminishing confidence as a result and he's at where he's at.
Hopefully the injury can bring him back rested and mentally refreshed. The playoffs too are a different style of play and a reset. So there is a chance things can turn around for him - at least to a degree where he's on like a 1 goal every 4 game pace during the playoffs. That would be good. We'll see.
