The stumbling block may have been Valimaki as the price for a rental, you’re right.
However, I imagine if they could have signed Stone long term as part of the trade, then Valimaki and a 2nd would have been an acceptable price to pay...but they couldn’t afford long term at 9.5 because of the cap issues next year.

Except the stories coming out afterwards were specifically about the inclusion of Valimaki. If the sticking point were about the cost of Stone, they would have either mentioned Stone, or just said something generic like they couldn't make it work.
If the problem is about Stone's ask, you don't throw out another player's name as the reason. Not only does it not make any sense, but it brings undo attention to that player.
