However, I would draw a distinction between "making the numbers work" and the Flames being "able to afford him".

We could make McDavid's hit work too, if it came down to it.

the problem is that some of the trades suggested to cut salary are accepted carte blanche... but maybe the Flames don't want to trade Brodie? Maybe they'd rather keep Frolik. Maybe the returns aren't great on either or both...Trading Neal is a pretty much impossible unless calgary is eating salary and giving up assets

Maybe they don't want to imbalance the cap by having a guy at 9-9.5 with Tkachuk at 8-8.5? If those guy get that, what are Johnny and Monny worth? 10? 11? when their contracts are up?

I'm as guilty as anyone else when it comes to Stone... i think he'd be a guy that could push the Flames over the top... but there's a lot to consider. Frankly the more I think about losing Dube and/or Kylington the more hesitant i get...
