In 1993 the Cape Breton Oilers won the Calder Cup.

Didn't Wayne Cowley go on to win a Vezina?

Leading scorer in the playoffs, a record that still stands, was future Art Ross and Rocket Richard winner Bill MacDougall.

The VCR line went on to be one of the best in NHL history, Shawn VanAllen, Dan Currie and Stephen Rice.

Didn't Francois Laroux win like a pile of Norris Trophies?
Right?

You can't throw a jersey in The Sad Place without hitting another damn MacDougall jersey

Their delusion is really confusing, but endlessly humorous. It comes immediately to mind whenever I see anything coming out of there, but I'll never understand how the fans are still buying all of this... and lining up for hours to collect signatures of these losers no less.

Expectations 'got away' from them because they wouldn't shut up about it. They parade out any sliver of success they can find to prove they have what it takes, and buy themselves a little more time. As one Oiler fan reminded us in the Arizona ATL, they were pretty braggadocious the first 20 games of this season. "Best start since 1985" they chattered about fresh off their #1 RW Rattie high... and they can't shed themselves of most involved fast enough just a few months later. It couldn't be less geniune coming from this guys mouth.

A strong AHL team means so little unless you're talking about players anyone believes will make an impact on your AHL roster. Look at the captains across the AHL, and you won't see too many familiar names. Most of those teams win by being a team of good AHLers...

The more they talk about Koskinen, the more great content we get for their inevitable parting of ways. It seems like the 'falling from grace' was well on it's way before a pen even touched ink... but they've made sure to put their own stamp on this one so they can't sweep it out with the Chiarelli trash. Since he signed that contract on Jan 21, he's had one game over .900 (.939 in the loss to Pittsburgh). Not only that, but his last decent game was .953 in the Jan 14 win against Buffalo. He's a no-name goalie that was good for a bit, and the group of idiots thought they were the smartest in the room yet again.

I love that this team thinks they're just a few pieces away from challenging teams 20 POINTS ahead of them with 20+ games left. They're staring at that playoff carrot so desperately, they ignore how garbage their team is around them. This weird Western Conference has been great fodder for the Flames, but also a few sparkly pieces to distract Oiler fans (and seemingly management) from the horrible reality that's in front of them.

They are not going to beat the Stars, Blackhawks, or the Canucks. Nor would they stand a chance against the Wild, Ducks, Kings, or the Avalanche if either of them turned their season around in a fashion Edmonton thinks is possible. It's assinine that anyone is absorbing this as reality.

They have not been playing well the last few games... and they are not a few little adjustments from being a good team. Not even close. They're 1-7-2 in their last 10, on a 4 game losing streak and only ahead of the lowly Kings who have rarely played near .500 hockey at any point in the season. This TDL is going to be amazing. This season is a gift.
