The Jets are going to be in a major cap crunch next year, especially if Laine wants 9+ million. Yes, he's an incredible goal scorer but with his on-and-off performance this year you'd have be at least a little worried about committing 70+ million dollars to him.
So instead you trade Laine for Stone@50%+Duchene@50%+Dzingel or something else, use the money that you would have spent on Laine to pay Stone.
So you get roughly a wash in talent long term (Laine out Stone in) while also getting a huge boost for this playoff run by adding Duchene.
Idk, it's got some merit. It'd be like doing Tkachuk for Stone+Duchene, though the Flames aren't in nearly as bad of a cap crunch as the Jets will be this summer.

I was thinking about something like this as well, and it would be epic!
Laine for both, on the assumption that you can negotiate an extension for Stone. Duchene you take as a rental.
Then figure out the cap situation in the summer.
The Jets would be seriously formidable this year (then in massive cap trouble going forward). Having said that, replacing Laine with Stone would make the forward group substantially better defensively, making it easier to consider moving one of Trouba or Meyers.
