It was a clear message that the Old Boys Club tenure was over.
If McDavid can't fix the Old Boys Club in Edmonton, no way Hughes can.

Nah, Nicholson was brought in by Lowe with recommendation to Katz from Gretzky as they all worked on the 2002, 2006 and 2010 Olympic teams (Chia did too in 2010, and Tambelleni did in 2002 at least as well). Another name th@t Katz can put on the trophy shelf, and ther because of the OBC, not an outsider.
Katz did bring in Chia, yes on the recommendation of Nicholson because of thst Olympic team year. But they only did half the job, they merifcfully kept on the OBC of Lowe and McTavish (and Howson) instead of cleaning those guys out.
MacTavish still had a daily role, and Lowe, though no role and lost the VP Hockey Ops title, was licking his severely bruised ego in the shadows, rarely heard from, but bided his time for the ability and opening to come back.
If Katz would’ve pushed Lowe and his buddies out the door instead of letting them hang around out of sympathy, the Oilers would be in a much better place right now. Boohoo, they aren’t.
