Two ex-oilers that have been amongst the worst NHL players at their respective positions are not going to help get this team another Stanley cup in the next year or two.

Bringing in Talbot gives us a 3rd bullet in the gun if one of or both of Smith/Rittich falter. I simply don’t trust Smith. If Rittich gets injured I am more confident in Talbot/Smith than Gillies/Smith.
Are there other goalies I would prefer? Yep, but I don’t think there are any out there that I’d like the acquisition cost of.
As for them being in “win now mode” that’s your opinion. I think our window is just opening and if you can add a piece like Puljujarvi for pennies that could contribute after a year or two in the AHL and some actual development then I don’t see the risk. I’m not talking about giving up a first or Andersson or anything like that. I’m talking about Talbot coming in as a warm body to see what he has in front of an NHL team/D-core and Puljujarvi coming in as a prospect, not a “win now” piece.
It doesn’t matter as its not going to happen anyways but making a small move for those 2 players doesn’t hurt the teams chances at a cup this year unless it causes a problem with team chemistry which is always a risk no matter who it is.
