I wouldn't really call Howard a big name at this point. And the Flames have also not done well with other no-names - Berra, Ortio, McBackup, Macdonald, etc.

Statistically Ramo wasn’t as good as Hiller for one season, but I didn’t like Hiller’s game even in 14-15 and the ugliness reared its head in the playoffs where he lost his job to Ramo and then permanently in 15-16 where Hiller had the worst season of his career.
But regardless, of all the names you’d have expected to have been good, it was actually the no name guys who emerged. I’m not necessarily saying those guys were all unbelievable or anything. I’m just saying those were the better goaltenders of that period IMO. Ramo was very solid here in his time and Johnson helped save the 16-17 season with a really good stretch.
Lastly, Howard may not necessarily be a big name per se. But he’s the biggest name in terms of rental goaltenders and Holland was even looking for 1st round pick in exchange for him. Obviously not going to get that, but my main point is, maybe the Flames should be looking for a cheaper insurance policy instead.
