If by ‘he’d benefit’ they mean they’re screwed cap-wise, I agree. The NHL better say no.

this does bug me a bit. I would fine with them extending him on a conventional conditioning stint (which as I understand it and am welcome to be corrected) means a veteran can keep playing in the AHL without waiver concerns but has to count against the cap and roster limits- at this point I'm sure they have figured out that he will be coming back (which is the point of this special stint isn't it?) and now they are just trying to avoid a cap crunch that they could have predicted was coming all season long
