I thought The Athletic were above that type of article, to be honest. Positivity is one thing but while the writing is better and the article clearly involved some research/interviewing, the sentiment is no different to Staples et al.
I did like this typo though:
"Mark Messier, the last player to captain the Oilers to a Stanley Cup championship, was known for his in-your-face, no-sense style."
It even had a 'c'mon Benny, let's go' comment in there, an example of the highest level of leadership matched only by that time he tapped Draisatl on the shoulder after losing and said those immortal words 'let's go get changed, hit the town and get Rickity Rickity wrecked, son'.
