Don Whittman was the voice of track and 80s hockey for Flames games out west. The Johnson call in 1988, and then the two in 1996.
Bailey's race was the first Saturday night, the relay, the second, thus the reference at the end.
I would say there was more American hype for this relay than the 150m sham. That build up was mostly all on the Canadian side, and Johnson played the villain long enough to make sure he got his cut of the purse.
The 1996 relay, in the USA, was hyped by NBC to be America's race on the final night of the games, the whole week.
Again, what a call by Whittman.
