Long term, this will continue to have a parasitic effect on the cumulative value of the franchise.

So to you....

current perceived value of a player - compensation paid (cap hit) = value of the contract

I think it's an interesting idea and great point, and I think this is what we are all do without thinking about what we are actually doing. I would like to go through all the contracts and value them in this way.

For example:

Lindholm: 6.5 million - 4.85 million = 1.65
Tkachuk: 7 million - 0.925 = 6.08

McDavid: 11.0 million - 12.5 million = (1.5)
Lucic: 2 million - 6 million = (4)
RNH: 6 million - 6 million = 0

Then you add them all up for a team, 0 would be consider the middle or neutral, negative would be bad and positive would be good. Do the best teams have the highest number? Of course the true value is so subjective - that's a problem. Do this with past teams - is there any indication that this can predict future success or of Stanley Cup wins?

I wonder why...

first off, as I stated in a previous post, they all want to appear as big shots and use someone else's money to overpay - got that.

secondly, they get exactly the same number of "draft picks" as every other team does, so they are managing them wrong is your real point. They don't pick the right players sometimes and with the ones they do pick, they don't develop those players properly is the issue.

What a mess... some hard choices need to be made... I don't see a way to keep McDavid around while you make them over the several years it's going to take - unless McDavid is brainwashed or a complete idiot, which is a possibility I guess.

Walk McDavid, walk.... the sooner you do, the better it will be for you. Like someone on here pointed out... the Oilers like to tar and feather everyone that leaves Edmonton - and that some planning and time is required to sour the public on McDavid first - to villainize him - but if he leaves now, he may be able to stop them from being able to do that.
