Well, conservative assessments agree that Smith's play has probably cost the Flames anywhere from 6 to 8 points. As of right now, the Flames have 71 points, and the Lightning have 76.
With those points, Calgary could be ahead of Tampa Bay by anywhere from 1-3 points, even accounting for the game in hand, putting them ahead.
That would make them statistically better than Tampa Bay, but subjectively I believe Calgary can play and beat any team in this league...including the almighty Tampa Bay Lightning.
So you may remain befuddled, if you like. No judgement.
