Welp, there goes the usefulness of my Bjugstad jersey.
Both McCann and Bjugstad have been underperforming for the past two years. Now Brassard is also an underperformer (still a quality veteran), and Sheahan is a good depth forward who has potential to be better than he's been this year.
Bjugstad makes 4.1 million for another two years after this one and is not quite worth his contract. McCann doesn't cost much, but he's a player the team hasn't been happy with since he came over in the first place. Both players coming back are on expiring contracts and are not likely to come back after this year. Throw in the 3 extra picks and this is a good deal for a Panthers team that likely isn't making the playoffs this year.
This was a way for the Panthers to dump cap and give them flexibility for next year. They also acquire picks in the process. I wouldn't be totally shocked to see them go after a bigger name in the off-season. I'm thinking Bobrovsky. They need a real goaltending solution in the very near future.
