You're right...but at some point you can only compare to what was actually selected. If you start "Cherry-picking" among the next N picks you'll always find a good player that will make the trade look bad. So although you're 100% correct -> I think we can only base the comparison established player for pick using the actual pick.
I know it was a different GM, but in 2008 the Flames DID pick Greg Nemisz, not Tyler Ennis, John Carlson or Roman Josi.
In 2009, we DID pick Tom Erixon, not Kyle Palmieri or Ryan O'Reilly.
And....now I'm depressed!
