I was just asking my camera-nutty brother-in-law this question at Christmas. I did a lot of research beforehand and, for an entry-level SLR, liked the Nikon D50. Before I could get a word in with my brother-in-law, he immediately recommended the D50 as well. (There's also the slightly-cheaper D40 that was released last month, but I'd still prefer the D50).

A kit with a 18-55mm lens will go for around $900, cheaper on eBay. I have a few purchases that are a higher priority, but I'll be getting this sometime in '07.
