I would take this with a grain of salt personally. First off how was Edmonton going to add 8.8 million in salary without sending out any? They didn't have cap issues at that time that they do today, but it's very rare that you see a team offload that much in salary without taking back any, let alone the two extra contracts.

We hear about these types of rumor at every draft, but we really don't see too many trades early in the first round that involve established players. Really outside of that year where the Flyers sent out Richards and Carter, there have not been a lot of top 10 picks moved at the draft for players.
