I would absolutely pay a 1st and a prospect for a top-tier rental right now. The Flames need size, physicality, and secondary scoring (particularly for the 2PP unit). Ferland might be the best player on the market to fill those needs.
I think it’s time to go all-in.

People saying just go after hIm in free agency is crazy talk, we don't need him next year. We need him right now for this playoff run.
People saying paying a 1st round pick that will be in the high 20s is "way too much to pay" is nothing to pay for a rental like Ferland when your window is open wider then it will probably ever be again. For most teams, a team this good happens once in a generation. There are present NHL teams (Wild, Blue Jackets, Panthers, Coyotes/Jets) that have NEVER had a team this good in its history. There are other teams that haven't had a team this good in 20 years r longer.
