I don't know if the same rules apply for Martyrdom for Saddam. If you look at it, there are two groups in Iraq who make up the majority (Sh'ia, Kurds) who would like nothing better then to see Saddam hang. His support(Sunni) group which is in the minority in the country may do something, but thier also might be a demorilizing. One thing that I have found interesting is that there has been no major call for his release, or a terrorist action really linked to his name. I think Saddam will pass quietly into history.
By hanging Saddam instead of imprisoning him, you take away the temptation to use him as a focal point for activities in breaking him out of a long imprisonment.
Personally I would have prefered that they used poisoned gas on him as a payback for him using those weapons on his own people, as it stands he won't have to suffer as long as his own people did since hanging is relatively quick if done properly.
In the long run Saddam's death will allow the majority of Iraq to move on.
