Not only that, but to have his rent almost match exactly what is allowed to be expensed is highly fishy. And the convenience of it going to a family member - so eventually he will receive it back as tax-free inheritence.
What else is weird is didn't he buy this property? And he was paying rent? The optics of this arrangement don't look good for him.
