While it seems like a great idea to lock a guy up for 8 years, a lot can happen over that time. Five (or 6) years provides some certainty, but also reduces the risk somewhat, and most importantly, keeps the cap hit manageable.

I don't think having Tkachuk go UFA at 26 is worth the million or two we'll save on the cap hit. Plus we already know he's a stud so there isn't as much risk to manage. The few we have seen at 5 or so years tend to not be elite players, I certainly wouldn't put TT in that category. Good player sure, but it would be idiotic to sign him to 8 years imo. A player like Tkachuk is a whole different story. He's the type of player you build your team around.
