This is true, which is why maybe splitting the difference would be the team that scores a touchdown after getting the ball first has to go for two to win, and if they don't get it the other team can win with a TD and an XP (the team who scores first can also kick the XP to add an additional strategic consideration). Basically turns the 50/50 portion into an actual play rather than a coin toss. But the defense doing their job argument sucks because the Pats just allowed 24 points in a quarter. They would have lost had KC won the toss and we'd be having the same discussion except mostly everyone would love the current OT rules.
