We can only hope that we are living through some cup years followed by the inevitable price of paying for declining production.
At some stage, you'll need to sign some veteran producers to contracts you won't like at the end of their careers. Or risk perhaps punting a Stanley Cup.
If Calgary comes close to winning a cup in the next two years but hen wins one in the third year, do you let Monny and Jonhny go (and basically give up another cup or 2) or sign them to contracts which will eventually stink?
Trade them before their last years you say? Well then you might have given up your only cup.
The only cautionary tale I see is to go for it when you have the chance and don't worry about the future that much. If you are always playing for the future, you'll likely never have a present.
