Thing is, getting the stud at the trade deadline doesn't always = cup. In fact, it hardly ever does. See Iginla, Jarome. Or Hossa in his first couple attempts.
Usually the best ones are those that fill lesser roles - Gaborik, Vermette, Timmonen, Handzus, Kaberle, Peverly. Now, TBF, Vermette cost a first rounder +. Kaberle did too. And Peverly cost a good young player (Wheeler).
Gaborik and Timmonen were cheaper.
I guess you could call Carter a top tier name that went at the deadline and helped win a cup.
