When considering going "all in" I think the rest of the NHL has to be one of the factors to look at. Sure, the core is young and has a few more cap friendly years, but will the rest of the West / NHL be as "weak" going forward?
The Flames have played well against the best of the west - NSH, WPG, SJS. Will LA, AD, and others be as ripe for picking as they are this year?
And what of the east? I think the Flames can go toe-to-toe with those favorites in a 6-7 game series. Would you be surprised to see any team other than TB, BOS, or WSH in the SCF?
I think this is a year to go for it. Flames players having career years coupled with weak competition. And I have no issues with rentals or coughing up any draft pick to do it.
with our luck:
2019 - Bobrovsky unhappy on his team. 2020 - he signs with STL, EDM, or LA
2019 - simmonds plays in the east. 2020 - he signs with VGK, AD, or DAL
2019 - AD, LA, STL all on a seemingly downward spiral. 2020 - all 3 have a "surprise" year al'a VCR.
