As far as my thoughts... I like the face that it very organized within the software provided. But the big hype is that Apple could afford a major marketing attack, and being one of the biggest sellers of legal online music sales, that doesn't hurt either.
Did I need the iPod? No, my PSP does most of what this thing does, and then some. Am I happy I got it? Yup... I've played on it every day since I've gotten it, trying to catch every nook and cranny in it.

I'm in the same boat as you. I didn't "need" it, but I got it as a bonus from work, now I take it everywhere. I love hooking it up to my portable stereo when I am working outside. I also bought Pac-Man for it and its tons of fun.
