Which isn't an option in today's CBA. Or did he walk away from his arbitration award, is that allowed? I know teams can only walk away from awards above a certain $ value.

I don't think players can refuse an arbitration award anymore either. Only teams have the option, and only if the player initiated the arbitration process and the awarded contract is higher than $3.5M:
