Watterson fought the company that syndicated Calvin and Hobbes to keep as much control over his characters as possible and does not allow any merchandising of C&H other than the books. He has done a couple of things for charity, but anything you or I see with Calvin or Hobbes is, without a doubt, infingement.
For a few years, Watterson would sign copies of his books for a bookstore in Ohio (he ceased doing it when speculators started buying up all copies looking for the autographed ones).
