I wonder if it would make Frolik feel better if they sat Neal for a game or two. Half joking, but I think this is likely the issue; not how he's been handled, but how he's pretty clearly been handled differently than Bennett and especially Neal.
It's a pretty well known phenomenon that people are extremely resentful towards being treated unfairly, much more so than than if they are treated equally bad.
This is a major reason why I think it's a bad idea to spoonfed opportunities to some guys to get their offense going for extended periods of time. Those opportunities are always at the expense of someone else, and at some point those other guys are going to get pissed off.
People get very anxious when they feel like they have no control over their situation. Frolik is in a situation where his spot in the lineup is constantly taken away from him for reasons that are beyond his control, and over time that has to get tiresome, especially since its for no good reason. Giving Neal looks on the second line has not helped at all. If it had, I'm sure Frolik would be okay with the rotation.
And yeah, never getting a chance to play on the PP has to start getting old when that 2nd PP unit is one of the worst in the league.
All that said, still not a fan of making it public. But I'm guessing Frolik is feeling like something needs to give.
I think some of this had to fall on the coaching staff. Frolik isn't known for being like this, and if they've managed to antagonize a solid player like this for really no clear benefit, it's clearly a mistake. Probably something they didn't realize they were doing, but still a mistake.
Of course you have to wonder if Frolik has sufficiently made his feelings known in private, but right now it is what it is. While it's interesting to speculate, at the end of the day we don't really know how and why exactly did it come to this. The blame for the situation is very likely shared by many people, but right now the situation just needs to be solved.
With luck they'll just settle it all with a good long talk, but I have a feeling that's hoping for too much.
