That seems like specious reasoning. With or with out Neal, the Flames would be at the top of the Western Conference because of the incredible play from 6 certain individuals.
It’s remarkable to me that a failed free agent signing in Brouwer received so much angst ans disdain here yet an equally if not potentially worse free agent signing in Neal isn’t receiving anywhere close to the same amount.
Just goes to show how winning can mask problems.
But I can pretty much guarantee that if the Flames are unceremoniously booted out of the playoffs and Neal plays exactly the same as he is now, that this place will get as ugly as the Brouwer bashing threads.
Neal’s performing has been awful this season. Utterly dreadful. But his situation isn’t just about his lack of scoring. It has more to do with opportunity cost for me. The top 6 minutes he plays could go towards someone else who would make better use of it. Same deal with his cap hit, that could go towards an even better player that would make a difference for this team. Better players have been getting scratched while he remains relatively unscathed. You’re kidding yourself if you don’t think this conversation is being had with upper management and/or the coaching staff.
