That's what I think might be the problem. It's not that Treliving isn't doing anything and expects Smith to rebound. I don't think teams are asking for something he's comfortable with giving up otherwise a trade would have been made by now. Even the third rounder for lower-tier backup with better stats option might not even be there.
This isn't NHL 19 where you can just keep offering prospects and picks until the computer says yes because you know you'll never have to worry about it because you'll never get that far anyway before you get NHL 20 and start over.
People think he should just overspend but that's easy to say when you're not him. He has to think about how what he's being asked to give up might affect the team's future vs the goalie he's getting. And bringing in a cheap option might not end up being any improvement in the end.
I think he wants to bring in someone he knows can take over should Rittich get hurt or starts to cool off rather than just trust that Rittich is going to stay hot the rest of the season.
