yeah, i think it was really just an unlucky situation: injury to Rittich, back to back games, Gillies not doing particularly well in the minors and Smith actually playing good the night before.
in this case, i think going with Smith was the right call, for those reasons.
But at this point, you simply can't give the other team freebies... those aren't goals that are earned, nor deserved by the other team and has got to be incredibly frustrating/deflating for the team to have to fight back, work so hard to get a goal, or to have your goalie gift the other team a soft goal....
Starting Smith is almost like spotting the opposition a goal and expecting the Flames to fight back every start.
