In spite of all the commotion that went on, however before the hit, the reaction from Joe Thornton suggests Bennett went too far. I think their coach called it "predatory", and in a way I can't disagree. I don't think the player, he hit, had anything to do with all the fights going on.
I think there has to be some level of respect between teams. If not, I think the risk of serious injury gets too high. I worry about Gaudreau. If someone ever purposely injures him, we will rue the day that we allowed the level of respect to sink too low.

Mainly with slashes because he is too hard to hit. Because he keeps his head up.
