It’s Christmas Eve. A day reserved for the wonderment of what the morning may bring. Peak excitement. As a child I remember the intoxication of Santa, the gifts, the toys and the chocolate.
In reflection those memories become more vivid as I age. They were simple traditions that without fail would always be there. That was my Christmas.
Now as I have my own kids encroaching the age where Christmas takes on a life of its own in their imagination - I find myself doing my best to preserve my own childhood traditions while building new ones with my family. Tonight, for the first time, it was my turn to read “The Night Before Christmas”. I could see the story starting to register with my oldest. A tiny smirk indicating the cogs of his minds eye turning. For me that is enrichment defined. I can only hope in a few years time that my youngest will be just as captivated by that same spell of Christmas Eve.
To the new parents, start your traditions now. To the veteran parents, keep them alive with every passing year. To those without parents honor your traditions of past. This is the merriment of the season. The majestic dance of the sugar plums. The one mandarin orange found elbow deep in your stocking.
Christmas Eve may just be the best night of the year.
From all of us to all of yours,
“Merry Christmas to all and to all a good Night”
