Three years until expansion. Three years.
Three years ago, the Flames roster included:
Hudler, Hamilton, Colborne, Wideman, Ferland, Stajan, Jones, Russell, Jooris, Engelland, Granland, Bouma, Jokipakka, Raymond, Nakladal, Bollig, Smid, Wotherspoon, Grant, Ramo, Hiller and Ortio (ignoring guys that played less than 10 games)
That's 22 players, an entire roster. And that's just from 3 years ago, it doesn't include guys that have come and gone since.
How about we get a little closer to the expansion draft before we start trading away key players. And even as we approach it, if it turns out that we have too many good defensemen, the solution is to trade with a team that has too many good forwards.
Regardless, we are very likely going to be a good team then. Which means we will probably lose a good player. That's how it goes.
