Here's my theory: the Flyers started talking to Quenneville and it got to a point where they thought they could hire him as their new coach, but didn't want to release the news yet because he wasn't available for a press conference. So they leaked it to a few members of the media. Then someone pointed out that Dave Hakstol was - against all reason and common sense - still employed by the team. This came as a shock, and both Holmgren and Fletcher were reeling, trying to figure out what to do. "I don't even have Dave's number anymore! Do you?"
