I think it was just more about opportunity and those opportunities existed at the time elsewhere.
The issue with Johnson was his baseline average. He could play lights-out amazing but then his normal play was sub-par which is tough to maintain in the NHL.
That being said, hes just being waived, injuries happen and he might see himself back in the show. He was never anything but a loyal soldier so I wish him nothing but the best.
