I always looked at the Sex Pistols and Buzzcocks as a divergence on the tree of music evolution.

The Sex Pistols were not great musicians, but they had the energy and image. And to be fair, they had some good hooks. They would go on to influence American punk, hardcore, metal, thrash, ska punk and glam rock.

The Buzzcocks were less about image and more about composing. To me, they were the branch that evolved into new wave, alternative, emo "indie", and pop rock.
