McDavid is a fantastic player but he is way overhyped, and I don’t think that’s a salty flames fan perspective. Compare his production to early Crosby years and he’s behind him by a fair margin. Compare him to Crosby’s early years and then take into account how they scored versus their peers and it becomes a chasm. Crosby was a much more dynamic offensive player in his early years, seems we’ve gotten used to his more well rounded game that we forget how much he stood out in the early years. You can do the same comparison to Ovechkin and will find much the same (and then compare Laine to him who everyone is also over the top about). There’s some very good young players in today’s game but none match up to those two.
Like most players in today’s NHL I expect to see about 5-7 really high production years out of McDavid and then he’ll begin to step back a little as the rest of his game develops, much how Crosby’s career has gone. But I don’t think he’ll ever be Crosby.
