Carolina had no intention of resigning Lindholm and Hanifin. Getting Ferland reduces their cap obligation for next year if they so choose. Hamilton is already on a nice cost-controlled contract, one that their GM would not be capable of negotiating. For Carolina the trade was mostly about cost control.
