7 points in a 10 game late-season call-up. However, 5 of those points were scored in a 3 game stretch against Arizona and Ottawa, who were two of the worst teams in the league last season. Outside of that 3-game window, he hasn't done much of anything in the NHL (statistically, at least).

It gives them flexibility by opening up two roster spots, so that may be a factor. Beyond that, they look like logical hockey moves for the team to make. If a possible trade is a factor, it's likely a small one.
Carrying three goalies long-term is never a good idea and they've been doing so all season.
Also, it looks like Zykov was in the AHL on a conditioning loan over the last couple of weeks (where he only had 2 points in 6 games) and had to be recalled on Monday after his conditioning loan expired. Waiving him just gives them the option to send him back to the AHL.
