Russia's aggression towards Ukraine is more about maintaining a buffer and a sphere of influence. It's a defensive measure to ensure that they don't have NATO or a strong US ally right on their border.
And they know they can take these actions because no Western power is going to take part in WWIII to prop up the mess that is the Ukranian government.
