Much like us calling for penalties against Gaudreau, when you have these talented quick and shifty players that are hard to defend against teams are going to to need to take liberties that will sometimes go uncalled.

I would think it's easier to not take a penalty against McDavid because he skates in a straighter line. Gaudreau makes a shift and you are caught sticking your stick out.

But seriously, Gaudreau gets slashed almost every shift. When they complain about McDavid half the time it's because someone managed to control him in a one on one physical battle, like happens between players all the time.

This was the non-call they howled about: tell me from this pic what Mussin possibly did to make McDavid fall that way. I think he just fell.
