They could have taken Marner or Hanifin. Everyone knew Strome's issue was skating and you had two of the best skaters on the board who also had production too. It's weird cause next year, they went with Keller who is pretty similar to Marner. Also in 2016, you had a prospect like Tkachuk who was similar to Strome with skating as the big question mark. It really is hard to tell with these things.

Maybe the game has changed too much in the past 3 years and the skating issues are bigger now. It was only 2 years ago that the big lumber Oilers and Ducks were battling it out in the second round and talked about as Stanley Cup contenders and now both are slow lumbering teams. But again, Tkachuk is still not a great skater, so I guess it comes down to the "special".
